Auringon-ja kuunpimennykset

Auringonpimennyksellä tarkoitetaan tilannetta, jossa aurinko ja kuu ovat yhtymässä (samassa paikassa eli kyseessä on uusi kuu) ja jossa kuunsolmu on vähintään 19 asteen päässä yhtymästä. Käytännössä auringon, kuun ja maan kiertoradat ns. kohtaavat taivaalla. Auringonpimennyksessä kuu tulee auringon eteen ja näin "pimentää" auringon.

Kuunpimennykset muodostuvat, kun aurinko, kuu (ovat oppositiossa eli vastapäätä toisiaan) ja kuunsolmu ovat yhteydessä. Käytännössä tämä takoittaa, että maa on auringon ja kuun välissä, jolloin kuu ei heijasta auringon säteitä.
